STUDENTS’ LATENT AND ACTUALIZED INTERESTS IN ENGLISH ACADEMIC READING

Abstract


Abstract: This research aims to find out whether there is a correlation between Students’ latent and actualized interests in English academic reading. The method of this research is correlational study. The process of collecting data was done through the use of ERAS, SIQ and Likert Scale questionnaires. There were 43 students from the third semester of English study program in academic year 2013/2014 of Tanjungpura University involved in this research. In connection to the research purpose, data was analyzed by using Pearson product moment formula through the assist of SPSS 19. Based on data analysis, the result is found that: (1) there is a strong correlation between latent and actualized interest in English academic reading, and (2) there is a positive and significant correlation between latent interest and actualized interest. In conclusion, this research shows that actualized interest in English academic reading is strongly correlated with latent interest especially in students’ feeling related latent interest.   Keywords: Latent Interest, actualized interest  Abstrak:Tujuan penelitian ini ialah mengetahui apakah ada hubungan antara minat laten mahasiswa dan minat aktualisasi mahasiswa dalam bacaan akademik berbahasa Inggris. Metode penelitian ini ialah penelitian korelasional. Proses pengumpulan data di selesaikan dengan menggunakan kuesioner ERAS, SIQ, dan Likert Scale. Terdapat 43 mahasiswa semester tiga prodi bahasa inggris tahun akademik 2013/2014 yang terlibat dalam penelitian ini. Universitas Tanjungpura dalam penelitian ini. Berdasarkan tujuan penelitian, data di analisis dengan menggunakan rumus pearson product moment melalui bantuan aplikasi SPSS 19. Berdasarkan analisis data, ditemukan bahwa: (1) Terdapat korelasi yang kuat antara minat laten dan minat aktualisasi dalam bacaan akademik berbahasa inggris, dan (2) Terdapat korelasi positif dan signifikan antara minat laten dan minat aktualisasi. Kesimpulannya, penelitian ini menunjukkan minat aktualisasi dalam bacaan akademik berbahasa Inggris berkaitan sangat erat dengan minat laten khususnya dalam minat laten yang berhubungan dengan perasaan mahasiswa.  Kata kunci: Minat Laten, Minat Aktualisasi
