Abstract

The problem that occurs at this time is that the heat transfer practicum tool is not yet available in the Mechanical Engineering laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering. New learning is delivered through lectures. The need for learning support facilities is needed, because it is one of the most important parts in the application of a theory that is obtained in lectures. Students of the Mechanical Engineering study program really need facilities as learning media for practicum courses, especially heat transfer. In this study, the authors designed and made a thermal conductivity measuring instrument for practical aids in the mechanical engineering department at the Tanjungpura of University with a variety of test specimens, namely brass, stainless steel, aluminum with a diameter of 2.54 cm and a length of 23 cm. In this study, the method used is the experimental method, in this experimental method is carried out by direct data collection and mathematical data processing. Thermal conductivity testing is carried out on the test specimens one by one with a predetermined time for each data collection. The results of the tests that have been carried out with variations of the brass, stainless steel and aluminum test specimens with a voltage of 12.1 Volts are obtained from the brass test specimen, the highest value obtained is 273.686 W/mºC while the lowest value is 122.249 W/mºC and the average value is 123.61 W/mºC. The results of the stainless steel test specimen test the highest value obtained was 125.092 W/mC while the lowest value was 122.249 W/mºC and the average value was 123.61 W/mºC. The results of testing the aluminum test specimen obtained the highest value of 403.326 W/mºC while the lowest value was 393.243 W/mºC and the average value was 397.276 W/mºC. Based on the characteristics of each different test specimen, it can be concluded that the average value from the calculation of the thermal conductivity value of the test specimen, aluminum is higher than the brass and stainless steel test specimens, while the average conductivity value of brass is higher than stainless steel.
