STUDENTS’ LEARNING STRATEGIES OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY

Abstract


This research aimed to know vocabulary learning strategies used by the eighth-grade students of MTSN 2 Pontianak in the academic year 2021/2022 to learn vocabulary. The research method used is descriptive research in the form of quantitative analysis. This research used a questionnaire developed by Scmitt (2000) to collect the data and interviews to support the questionnaire results. The research subject is 36 class A-grade students of MTSN 2 Pontianak. The results of the research show Determination strategies, Social strategies, Memory strategies, Cognitive strategies, and Metacognitive strategies are all used by students. But some strategies are most frequently used by students. The most active strategies used by students were Metacognitive strategies, with the highest score with a total score of 70%. The second strategy is the determination strategy with a total score of 69%; the third one is the Memory strategy with a total score of 61%; the fourth one is the social strategy with a total score of 55%, and the last one is Cognitive strategies with a total score of 52%.
