Abstract


Abstract This research is a conducted to determine the ability of the students to understand the concepts and critical thinking skills of material production of social studies subjects. This study used quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a nonequivalent control group design. The researcher determined by selecting two classes considerd the similarity of the sample characteristics, the are clases VII A as an experimental class and class VII B is a control class. The research data, is obtained through carried out two tests and questionnaires on the effectiveness of the problem based learning model (PBL), Likert scale. The results show that the implementation of problem-based learning models can improve students' understanding of concepts and creative thinking abilities. Based on the results of ANOVA analysis, show that there is a significant effect. Based on the t test there is a difference of the increase in pre-test and post-test score between the experimental class and control class. Furthermore, the average creative thinking ability of the experimental class furthermore the average creative thingking ability of experimental class is higher than the control class. It can be concluded that there are significant differences in student learning outcomes scores in experimental class and the control class.
