ABSTRACT

Necessity is a basic demand that must be met to achieve ones’ balance. The necessity arises when someone feels deficient, imperfections that can interfere with his wellbeing. Whether the necessity of students is met affects the behaviour of students. Learners will feel secured and satisfied when their necessity is met, and feel depressed when their necessity is not met. This study discusses the necessity of class VIII students of SMPN 14 Pontianak based on Abraham Maslow's theory and specifically discusses the students’ necessity of physiology, security, love, appreciation, and self-actualization. The research method used is descriptive in the form of survey research. Thirty-three out of 309 students were taken as the sample of this study. Data collection technique used was an indirect communication technique. The data collection tool used was a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a percentage formula. The necessity of students in the field was classified in a "good" category. Teachers and parents are advised to give a clear picture of what necessity are prioritized as a guide to meet the necessity of students because these necessities are highly related to one another. Meeting the proper necessity will make students feel more stable in living their daily lives and vice versa.
