This study aims to determine the planning of social studies learning. The use of social studies textbooks, and the constraints in using social studies textbooks for class VII in SMPN 3 Pontianak. The research method used in this research is the qualitative method in form of descriptive. The sources of data for this study were obtained from the head deputy of curriculum, social studies teachers, head of libraries, and class VIIg students of SMPN 3 Pontianak, used in this research were observation data, interview, and documentation. The results of this study showed that the use of social studies textbooks in social studies learning planning means that learning planning has been implemented by the teacher. It is suitable for the learning tools listed in the lesson plan. The use of social studies textbooks by grade VII SMPN 3 Pontianak, served as the main learning resource, be a reference for teachers in providing material, assignments and homework as material for student evaluation. The textbooks used are books by the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, the revised 2017 edition of the 2013 Curriculum. The obstacle is (1)distributing textbooks to schools takes a long time, (2)lack of reading interest of students, (3)textbook thickness, (4)the language used by social studies textbooks is rigid and makes students lazy to read so they have to use the internet.
