Abstract

Learning motivation is one of the factors that determines the success of Mandarin language learning. As Mandarin language is one of the most difficult languages to be learnt, many students have been less motivated in the learning process. Therefore, the writer suggests that the teacher can use variety of teaching methods and media in the classroom. The aim of this research is to investigate the way to implement Total Physical Response technique in Mandarin language learning as well as the effectiveness of this technique towards students’ motivation and scores. In this research, the writer used both experimental method and testing method. In the application of Total Physical Response, the teacher will demonstrate the gesture of particular verb. The findings of research revealed that Total Physical Response was able to increase learning motivation. This has been proven by the scores of the students which were higher than that of students in the previous test. In conclusion, this technique is highly recommended for its contribution in improving students’ learning motivation and academic achievement.
