THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INQUIRY BASED LEARNING TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION ON RECOUNT TEXT

This classroom action research used Inquiry Based Learning to improve SMPN 10 students in reading comprehension on recount text that was done in three cycles. The data were derived from observation checklist, field notes and field records, and test. The researcher focused on three stages of Inquiry Based Learning, such as engagement, exploration, and evaluation. The result revealed that the implementation of Inquiry Based Learning improved students’ reading comprehension on recount text. The result also indicated that students’ critical thinking was evident in posing and solving the problem in reading comprehension on recount text because the students need to pose and solve the problem by themselves. The result was supported with the improvement of the students’ mean score. On the first cycle, the students’ mean score is 47,40. The students’ mean score improved to 72,16 in the second cycle and in the third cycle, the mean score improved to 84,97. Based on the results above, it could be concluded that the implementation of Inquiry Based Leaning improves students’ reading comprehension on recount text. In other words, this approach can overcome the problems in reading comprehension in helping the students to identify the main idea, find the details of the text and understand the meaning of the vocabularies.
