Abstract

Rapid technological advances have presented Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an alternative approach to language teaching and learning. One of the most recent developments is the emergence of Claude AI, a writing assistant designed to assist users in various writing activities. This study aims to analyze the potential use of Claude AI as a writing assistant in assisting and improving college students' academic writing skills. Through a case study design, this research investigates the perspectives of two students majoring in English Education at Tanjungpura University regarding their experiences using Claude AI. Data were collected through observation and interviews and analyzed using Miles Huberman's qualitative data analysis approach (data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing). The findings revealed three main themes: 1) Claude AI facilitates the writing process by helping to create initial drafts, overcoming writer's block, paraphrasing, summarizing, correcting grammar, and creating outlines, 2) The accessibility and comprehensiveness of Claude AI features, such as the ability to upload various file types and process files based on user requests, and 3) Development of writing skills while managing reliance on AI through strategies such as manually double-checking and rephrasing AI results. This study highlights the powerful potential of Claude AI in academic writing while maintaining critical thinking and originality of students’ ideas.
