A Systematic Review: The Impact of CPH and Age on Second Language Acquisition in EFL Context
Abstract
This systematic review examines the impact of age and the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH) on Second Language Acquisition (SLA) in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) settings. Through analysis of seven empirical studies, it finds that younger learners generally achieve higher proficiency levels compared to older counterparts. The relationship between age and the CPH is intricate, challenging traditional perspectives. While age significantly influences SLA outcomes, its effects are contingent on various contextual factors. Future research avenues could explore interdisciplinary approaches to gain deeper insights into age-related effects in SLA within EFL environments.
